Your autumn reset

The UK clocks go back on Sunday 25 October, and the evenings get darker fast. Five easy habits to keep your energy up through the season.

  1. Get outside in the morning. Ten to twenty minutes of daylight early in the day helps set your body clock, which matters more once the evenings draw in.
  2. Batch-cook your grains. Cook a pot of quinoa, spelt or pearl barley on Sunday. It turns a 30-minute dinner into a 10-minute one all week.
  3. Eat with the season. October is good for squash, kale, beetroot, apples and pears. Seasonal produce tends to taste better and cost less.
  4. Keep moving when it's cold. Shorter, more regular sessions are easier to stick to than long ones. Lay your kit out the night before.
  5. Protect your evenings. Dim the lights, put the phone down a little earlier and keep a regular bedtime, even at the weekend.

Food

What makes a good bowl?

Start with a whole-grain base, add a protein like beans or lentils, pile on greens, then finish with something fermented, a healthy fat and some crunch. Swap ingredients freely and you've got a week of different lunches.

Kitchen tip

Don't heat your ferments

Sauerkraut and kimchi are best added raw, at the end. Heat kills the live cultures, so stir them through after cooking, or serve them on the side.

Habit

Aim for plant variety

Herbs, spices, seeds, nuts, beans and grains all count as different plants. A single power bowl can cover ten or more, so a varied week is easier than it sounds.

FAQ

Good to know

How long does the power bowl take to make?

About 15 minutes if your grains are already cooked. Cook a batch of quinoa, spelt or pearl barley at the weekend and it comes together in minutes during the week.

Is the power bowl vegan?

Yes. Every ingredient in the recipe is plant-based: whole grains, beans or lentils, greens, sauerkraut or kimchi, tomatoes, avocado, olive oil, lemon and seeds. Check the label on your kimchi, as some brands contain fish sauce.

Can I make the bowl ahead?

Yes. Keep the grains and beans, the greens and the dressing in separate containers in the fridge, and add the avocado and ferments just before eating.

What sizes and colours does the vest come in?

The ribbed vest comes in black and white, in sizes S to XL.
